The graphic strength of this image is helped not only by its composition but by its color relationships, which I thought out before making the image. Orange and blue are complementary colors, falling opposite each other on the color wheel; as with all complementary pairs, one color is cool while the other is warm, but both are of equal strength, so they intensify each other. In addition, orange and red are analogous colors, being contiguous on the color wheel. Analogous color schemes can sometimes become monotonous, so successful use of analogous colors often involves using the complement of one of the analogous colors as well, which happens here with the blue background (again, the complement of orange).
